The Graduate Hospital may no longer be operating, but the neighborhood that bears its name is thriving, and for good reason. Unlike the stretch of South Street east of Broad St., famous for its eclectic stores and popular Philadelphia fare, the western stretch warms up and slows down, creating a truly cozy neighborhood vibe. South Street West is the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare; it’s clean, well-lit and extremely pedestrian-friendly thanks to a vibrant entrepreneurial energy coming from the neighborhood’s numerous small businesses. Strollers share the sidewalks with young professionals, old bars and new cafes abound. It is a neighborhood where passersby still wave and smile, bringing old town charm to a modern city. Many of the streets are small and quiet--a peaceful escape within walking distance to local markets, small businesses, clean parks, and a vibrant bar scene.
Though there are a few low-rise condos in one to five story buildings with 1 to 2 bedrooms, the area is mostly town-homes. They range from small 700-800 square foot 2 bedroom, two story row-homes, 3 to 4 bedroom, two or three story row-homes, all the way up to brand new 4,000-5,000 square foot homes with parking and roof decks. Some row-homes may also include finished basements for added square footage. The majority of the backyards will be very small, just big enough for a table and chairs or a lovely urban garden.
It is a quick trip into center city on public transit, especially convenient for those who will be
traveling to the city for work or school and want to avoid the stressful traffic on the way home. Bus routes drop off and pick up on South Street, as well as slightly further into the residential district of Graduate Hospital. The Lombard-South stop on the Broad Street Line provides the most readily accessible subway access. The nearby South Street Bridge provides easy access to I-76 and I-95.
Bordered by Broad St, Grays Ferry Ave, South St, and Washington Ave, Graduate Hospital is the premiere location for families, students, and professionals alike. The Lombard-South stop on SEPTA’s Broad Street line places you directly on Graduate Hospital's eastern border.
Graduate Hospital is extremely pedestrian and bike friendly. Don’t have a bike? Don’t worry! There are Indego bike rental stations conveniently within the Graduate hospital area.
Though the restaurant atmosphere in Graduate Hospital is comfortable, it is not lacking in diversity and excitement. Keep your tie at home and your wallet heavy with plenty of options, from favorite breakfast spots like Ants Pants (boasting an Australian-centric menu) to chill hang-outs like Ten Stone, where friendly faces enjoy micro brews on draught in the warm atmosphere.
Be warned, the selection may be difficult, as Graduate Hospital has a plethora of bars and pubs to choose from. Doobies, for example, with its killer juke box, vegan food selection, and board games will keep you wGraduate Hospital Philadelphia PAatered, fed, and entertained for hours.
Though many of the locally owned businesses are cafes, the scene is emerging dutifully, keeping up with the culture of local Philadelphia entrepreneurs. Loop is a perfect example – a yarn store catering to those keen on keeping it handmade.
